Although telemedicine and teleophthalmology are not new concepts, their rapid pace of evolution has not been matched by the regulators and legislation behind the provision of healthcare in the UK. Indeed, there are no specific standards or legal requirements that differentiate the care provided for a patient in person to that delivered remotely. This review provides an in-depth discussion of both the recommended history and investigations required for both common and emergency ophthalmic conditions which may be managed using telemedicine in the community.
