DISCUSSION: How to manage myopia in practice 1

Description: This session aims to help Optometrists start a discussion about the significance of myopia and its relevance to both parent and patient. Three cases will be presented, one pre-myope, an emerging myope and established myope. We will look at how discussions can differ in all three cases. Using evidence-based practice in each instance we will discuss how best to approach each different case and the tools available to aid a meaningful discussion about managing myopic progression.

- Understand evidence-based practice to aid decision making when considering myopia management
s.7 Conduct appropriate assessments, examinations, treatments and referrals
- Understand the significance of cycloplegic refraction, axial length measurement and appropriate record keeping when carrying out myopia management
- Understand how to adapt your approach if a child keeps progressing with a particular strategy in myopia management.

- Able to discuss the significance of myopia on ocular health with parents and children
s.1 Listen to patients and ensure they are at the heart of decisions made about their care
- Able to discuss with patients and their families how myopia management may help to slow the worsening of myopia and the option of not doing myopia management
