About the event

This in-person peer review for both general and IP optometrist points in Belfast, is free of charge for College members. This session will cover your peer review CPD requirement, offering three CPD points. There is the option to attend a general optometrist peer review OR the IP peer review. Booking is vital as spaces are limited so click on the book now button above to avoid disappointment. 


Earlier in the day, World Sight Day will bring together optometrists, ophthalmologists, researchers, and other professionals to share key updates and real-world case studies in eye health. Attendees can claim self-directed CPD, and certificates will be issued upon attendance. To register for World Sight Day or the Pan Ophthalmology Day (POD), please use the links provided below.

General peer review

This peer review session will cover your GOC peer review requirement. It is worth three interactive CPD points.

You will be assigned a table with up to 10 other optometrists and participate in a facilitated discussion to review three cases.

Each table will have an experienced facilitator who will help guide the discussion.

The case studies are: Emergency referrals and utilising e-records effectively, Cataract referral, internal referral

NOTE: The content of this session is a repeat of peer review sessions which took place at Optometry Tomorrow 2024 on 28 and 29 April 2024.

  • Able to work collaboratively with colleagues in the interests of patients, and safely transfer responsibility for the patient through effective handover/referral of patient information to colleagues

IP Peer Review

This dedicated therapeutics peer review session is only open to optometrists who are fully qualified independent prescribers. The session will cover your GOC IP peer review requirement and is worth three interactive CPD points.

You will be assigned a table with up to 10 other optometrists and participate in a facilitated discussion to review three cases.

Each table will have an experienced facilitator who will help guide the discussion.

The case studies are: Child with a sore red eye, managing glaucoma following a pituitary gland tumour, patient with history of anterior uveitis

NOTE: The content of this session is a repeat of online IP peer review sessions which took place online on 12 February 2025 and 13 May 2025.

Learning outcomes

Clinical practice

s.5 Keep your knowledge and skills up to date 

  • Able to recognise the signs, symptoms and risk factors associated with the following conditions: orbital cellulitis, pre-septal cellulitis and anterior uveitis

s.7 Conduct appropriate assessments, examinations, treatments and referrals

  • Know how to manage patients with suspected orbital cellulitis and recurrent anterior uveitis
  • Recognise when referral for an ophthalmologist or general practitioner opinion is indicated

Communication

 s.1 Listen to patients and ensure they are at the heart of decisions made about their care 

  • Understand the impact of both ocular and non-ocular comorbidities on a patient’s ocular condition and make appropriate modifications to management where needed

s.2 Communicate effectively with patients

  • Able to explain clinical management decisions to a patient so that they understand the guidelines and boundaries within which optometrists work

Specialty CPD – IP                   

  • Understand the therapeutic management for orbital and pre-septal cellulitis
  • Know the therapeutic management options including combined therapy preparations available for chronic open angle glaucoma
  • Able to therapeutically manage patients with anterior uveitis / at risk of steroid induced intraocular pressure rise
