Stage 2

Trainees undergo a three to four hour assessment in their practice, including a routine eye examination, a soft contact lens fitting with aftercare and a case discussion around your records.

The Stage 2 assessment consists of three elements:

  • a routine eye examination on a prebyopic patient you have not seen before, using appropriate instrumentation. This can include a slit-lamp or refractor head if you wish. You may not use autorefractor results
  • a soft contact lens fitting and aftercare on a patient you have not seen before
  • assessment of the over-arching competencies. This takes a similar form to the Stage 1 assessments.

The College will arrange all mystery patients. You will be assessed by an assessor you do not know, and they will not contact you before the assessment.

Make sure you read the Stage 2 section in your Scheme for Registration handbook and the essential documents below before beginning your preparation for this assessment.

Training address

It is important you keep your main address up-to-date and listed as your main practice address as this will be where the College arranges your Stage 2 assessments. If you wish to change your address during your training, you should change the details in the Membership area and complete the online form to alert the Education team.

If you do not alert the Education team of your change of address and a visit then needs to be cancelled, a cancellation fee will be charged. See our Fees section for more details.

Additional visits and resits

You only have to resit the section(s) you failed in your previous attempt. There is no limit to the number of attempts you may have at Stage 2. Additional visits incur a fee, please consult our Fees section for more information.

If you require a resit, this will be booked automatically within six weeks of your previous attempt and you will receive at least two weeks’ notice of your re-sit date. Contact the College immediately if you would like longer to prepare for your resit or if you have any holidays planned during this re-sit window, please email

Once a visit is booked, unless for certified medical reasons, rearranging the visit will incur a cancellation fee. Consult our Fees section for more information.
