The College welcomes new Fellows at our annual Diploma Ceremony

We welcomed 11 new Life and Honorary Fellows and three new Fellowships by Portfolio.

The College of Optometrists has recognised the outstanding achievements and contributions of 11 individuals working in eye health by awarding new Life and Honorary Fellowships at this week’s Diploma Ceremony on Tuesday 18 November 2025 in Westminster, London. The College also welcomed three new Fellowships by Portfolio.

The new fellowships were presented at the College’s annual Diploma Ceremony in Westminster which welcomed over 450 new optometrists to the profession and celebrated the achievements of its members through the award of Higher Qualifications and Research Excellence Awards

New Life Fellows

Life Fellows are members of the College who are nominated for their contribution to the College or to their profession. Life Fellowships were presented to:

Stephen Perry Clark FCOptom

The College has awarded a posthumous Life Fellowship to Stephen Perry Clark, a distinguished optometrist whose 40-year career combined clinical excellence, professional leadership and service to vulnerable populations.

John Dixon Salt FCOptom

As a founding College Fellow, John Dixon Salt enjoyed a long career in independent practice before retiring in 2019.

Richard Edwards FCOptom

Richard Edwards recently retired as consultant to the Optical Consumer Complaints Service (OCCS), concluding a distinguished 40-year career in optics.

Professor Edward Mallen FCOptom

Professor Edward Mallen is Professor of Physiological Optics at the University of Bradford and has contributed extensively to the College as Chair of its Research Committee, President and Chief Examiner.

David O’Sullivan OBE FCOptom

David O’Sullivan is Chief Optometric Adviser to the Welsh Government.

Dr Mary-Ann Sherratt FCOptom

Dr Mary-Ann Sherratt is Head of Optometry at Bristol Eye Hospital. Dr Sherratt has also served as President and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the College.

New Honorary Fellows

Honorary Fellows are awarded to individuals involved in the wider eye healthcare and vision science professions who have been recognised for their outstanding contribution to optometry or the College. Honorary Fellowships were awarded to:

Marsha de Cordova MP HonFCOptom

Marsha de Cordova is the Labour MP for Battersea, chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Eye Health and Visual Impairment, a former Lambeth councillor, and a long-standing champion of disability rights.

Cecilia Fenerty HonFCOptom

Cecilia Fenerty has made an exceptional contribution to ophthalmology and optometry through her work at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH), where she has served as a consultant ophthalmologist and glaucoma specialist.

Andrew Kitchen HonFCOptom

Andrew Kitchen is Chief Finance Officer at Insight Investment and has served as a co-opted Lay Trustee of the College of Optometrists, contributing actively to the Audit and Pay and Awards Committees.

Helen Perkins HonFCOptom

Helen Perkins recently retired from her role as Clerk of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers where she oversaw all aspects of the Company’s operations.

Liz Tomlin HonFCOptom

Liz Tomlin is Head Orthoptist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and also serves as a BIOS Trustee.

New Fellows by Portfolio

Fellowship by Portfolio recognises achievements in the workplace and is awarded for outstanding contributions to furthering excellence in the practice of optometry. Fellowships by Portfolio were awarded to:

Kristen (Kris) Cottier FCOptom

Kris Cottier has made an outstanding and sustained contribution to optometry through clinical excellence, educational leadership, and service development across South East London and further. His leadership exemplifies his vision, innovation, and dedication to patient care and the profession.

David Jameson FCOptom

David Jameson has made an exceptional contribution to the education, training, and professional development of optometrists across the UK. His commitment to excellence and his influential leadership in education and workforce development have left a lasting legacy on the profession.

Dr Sheeraz Janjua FCOptom

Sheeraz Janjua exemplifies clinical excellence, academic achievement, and entrepreneurial innovation in optometry. His enduring commitment to patient-centred practice, lifelong learning, and community-focused innovation embodies the highest standards of The College of Optometrists Fellowship.
