37. Professional boundaries and social media

13 November 2020

You 'like' a post on social media and one of your patients disagrees with your reaction. What should you do?

Scenario

William, an optometrist and practice owner, has a popular personal social media feed. He recently ‘liked’ a post of a picture of a cat making a confused expression. The picture also contained a comment about immigration and a link to its authors home page. The author of the post is someone who many people perceive to have extremist views. One of William’s patients, Sarah, has contacted him and said that he should ‘unlike’ the post as it is written by an extremist author.
