Scheme for Registration

The Scheme for Registration helps you to develop your skills and knowledge in the workplace. It is your route to becoming a fully qualified optometrist and is approved by the General Optical Council.

There are three parts to the Scheme: Stage One, Stage Two and the OSCE, and you have 2 years and 3 months to complete the Scheme, although many trainees complete it in 15 months.

With the support of your supervisor, the stages of the Scheme are designed to provide you with all the experiences, skills, and patient encounter numbers you need to successfully complete the OSCE.

There will be changes to the overarching assessment from 12 June 2026. Find out more about these changes.
