The study was conducted following the suggestion from research that the ascorbic acid (AA) intake recommended by the World Health Organization was too low to prevent microvascular fragility.
It found consistent evidence from examining 15 trials that setting human AA requirements based on scurvy prevention leads to AA plasma levels that may be too low to prevent increased gingival bleeding.
