Introduction

The role of the supervisor is pivotal to the success of the pre-registration trainee in moving from optometry student to professional practitioner. But what is involved in supervising pre-registration trainees and how can it be truly effective? This article offers practical advice on how to create an optimum experience for both supervisors and trainees. Further articles will address in more detail some of the issues raised by this article.
