Introduction
This article provides a review of the basic understanding of autoimmunity and its relevance to autoimmune disease. Its main remit is to describe some of the common autoimmune diseases which will present to a community optometric practice and discuss their underlying pathogenesis. Modern approaches to treatment are also reviewed. A short glossary of some immunological terms is included.
