VISION 2020 UK and the UK Vision Strategy

This article explores the need for, and benefits of, the UK Vision Strategy, and the role of the optometrist in an integrated cross-sector team.
Introduction
The demand on eye health and sight loss services is predicted to rise rapidly over the coming years. Currently, around 2 million people in the UK live with sight loss. By 2020 this figure will have increased by 22 The WHO has responded to this predicted increase with the VISION 2020 resolution, calling for each supporting country to develop a plan for the elimination of avoidable sight loss by the year 2020. The cross-sector-led UK Vision Strategy is the partnership-based framework for achieving this target in the UK. This article explores why the UK Vision Strategy is needed and the benefits of this approach. It explores the impacts of changing population demographics and the role of the optometrist as part of an integrated cross-sector team to deliver effective services.
