Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the commonest skin cancer in the western world. The community optometrist is ideally placed to detect early lesions.

Introduction

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the commonest skin cancer in the western world. BCC is a malignant skin tumour, and although it is rare for it to metastasise, it can be locally destructive. When diagnosed and treated early the prognosis for recovery is good, and the community optometrist is ideally placed to detect such early lesions.
