Introduction 

In the first part of this review, the effects of diabetes on the ocular structures that contribute to refractive power will be described. The second part of the paper reviews the scientific literature relating to refractive power shifts in diabetes. The third part considers the main hypotheses as to how myopic and hyperopic shifts could occur with changing blood glucose concentration. The final part of the paper considers the implications for the optometrist in practice.
