Webinar - AI, optometry and the retina: where are we, and where are we going (quickly)?

Virtual session

This webinar is the rescheduled event from 9 December 2025.

About the event

Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly become an important part of everyday life. Healthcare, and eye care in particular, is no exception. But:

  • what is AI, really? How does it work, beyond the hype created by a name invented in the ‘60s as a slogan?
  • how can we expect AI to help optometrists, ophthalmologists and patients?
  • what should we not expect from AI? What are its limits, where are the risks? Will patients accept to be treated by AI programs?
  • and can the development of regulatory frameworks match the fast pace of AI research and breakthrough?

We shall address these and other questions in this webinar.

Learning outcomes

Clinical Practice

Keep your knowledge and skills up to date (s.5)

  • Develop a broad understanding of the clinical AI tools available in eye care and how they may be used clinically to augment your clinical decision-making

Leadership and Accountability

Ensure a safe environment for your patients (s.12)

  • Understand the regulatory framework of AI as a medical device and how to assess the supporting evidence base in order to ensure AI is used safely and effectively
