1. 3D printing may transform IOL design

A new way of manufacturing an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to replace a cloudy crystalline lens caused by cataract shows promise, says a proof-of-principle study.

Researchers demonstrated the potential of a rapid prototyping process for IOLs using stereolithography. This builds objects one layer at a time using an ultraviolet laser, producing accurate, functional prints that feature smooth surfaces and fine detail.

The study, in Current Eye Research, concluded that the process could be used for the development of lens-like 3D objects, with good transparency, foldability and biocompatibility. It would also eradicate the need to first develop specific IOL moulds or extensive lathing, allowing for novel designs.
