GOC Learning outcomes

What are learning outcomes?

Learning outcomes are clear goals that describe what students should know or be able to do by the end of their training. In optometry, these outcomes help make sure students are ready to practise safely and confidently. The General Optical Council (GOC) sets these outcomes for all optometry courses in the UK. They cover key areas like patient care, communication, clinical skills, ethics, risk, leadership, and lifelong learning. Each outcome is assessed at different levels - from basic knowledge ('Knows how') to full independence in practice ('Does'). In the CLiP programme, most outcomes are tested at the highest level, meaning students must show they can apply their skills confidently and consistently in real-life situations.

Learning outcomes in CLiP

The CLiP programme is designed to ensure students meet the GOC’s learning outcomes while working in real clinical settings. Before starting CLiP, students must have passed all earlier parts of their course. During placements, students are assessed through tasks, logbook entries, and discussions with assessors. Most outcomes are tested at the “Does” level - showing students can work independently. The programme uses detailed guidance to help assessors know what to look for, ensuring fair and consistent marking. This approach helps students build confidence and develop the skills they need to become safe, effective optometrists.

Core outcomes

Some learning outcomes are especially important for safe practice. These include listening to patients, respecting their rights, keeping good records, and following legal and ethical rules. These ‘core outcomes’ are checked throughout CLiP and are a key focus during the face-to-face assessment in Part One. If a student doesn’t meet these standards, they may fail that part of the assessment. There are also two learning-related core outcomes that focus on personal growth - like reflecting on feedback and planning how to improve. These are built into every visit and help students track their progress and keep learning throughout their careers.
