Assessment visits

Visit prerequisites

It is the student's responsibility to ensure that they have logged all the prerequisite evidence and arranged for their supervisor to approve it prior to the assessment visit deadline, which will normally be one week in advance.

Any task that does not have the full complement of prerequisite evidence logged by the deadline will be treated as failed, unless there are approved exceptional circumstances.

Visit attendance

By attending an assessment visit, students declare themselves fit to sit the assessment. Extenuating circumstances raised after the visit will only be considered in exceptional cases, such as unexpected hospitalisation. If a student or the practice is not ready to start the assessment, the visit may still proceed if at least one hour remains, but only tasks that can be fully completed in that time will be assessed. Students who do not attend will be marked as failed unless there are approved, documented exceptional circumstances.

How assessment visits are organised

Assessment visits are organised at four points throughout the placement. The student will usually need to have the visit within the set window for the assessment and will need to be ready in terms of all the visit prerequisites and training. Within this schedule, there will be scope to schedule students later in the assessment window if required.

There will be one remote and one face-to-face visit in each of the two CLiP parts, so four assessment visits in total:

  • CLiP 1R (CLiP Part One: remote visit) - around nine to 12 weeks from starting the CLiP placement
  • CLiP 1F (CLiP Part One: face-to-face visit) - around 18 to 20 weeks from starting the CLiP placement
  • CLiP 2R (CLiP Part Two: remote visit) - around five weeks from starting CLiP Part Two
  • CLiP 2F (CLiP Part Two: face-to-face visit) - around 13 weeks from starting CLiP Part Two

A different Assessor will be assigned to each visit.

Assessor role and marking

The Assessor will be able to access the student’s CLiP Portal logbook in advance of and during the visit. The student and Supervisor will be able to flag logbook entries they want the Assessor to check, for certain tasks, but the Assessor will also be able to search the student’s logbook more widely.

While some tasks are focussed on direct observation of practice, there are many tasks which involve the Assessor reviewing logbook interactions and in-practice patient records with the student. The Assessor’s role in this discussion is to verify that the interactions recorded in the logbook took place and to test the student’s understanding of what has been written and ability to apply their knowledge and skills. Sometimes this will involve extrapolating from the record and asking them what they would do if the patient or the circumstances were different.

The Assessor will record Pass or Fail results against each task and sub-task and will be able to make notes on the visit.

Assessment framework

CLiP 1R is a two-hour visit, conducted online, with five tasks, three of them assessed.

CLiP 1F is a three-and-a-half hour visit, in the student’s practice, with nine tasks, seven of which are assessed.

The Project focusses on ways of improving patient experience and patient outcomes.

CLiP 2R is a two-hour and 20 minute visit carried out online, comprising seven tasks, five of which are assessed.

CLiP 2F is a three-hour visit, carried out in the student’s practice, with five tasks, four of which are assessed.
