Monitoring progress

Student risk profile

The Supervisor role involves assuring patient safety, overseeing learning, and mentoring and coaching the student on their placement journey. To help Supervisors monitor all these elements, the CLiP Portal has a summary dashboard which provides a snapshot of the student’s experience and risk profile based on what they have recorded in the logbook.

The summary dashboard shows their progress through a Red-Amber-Green staging process based on counting the number of experiences they have logged.

The risk framework

When students record patient interactions in the logbook, they will select from structured drop-down menus with key features such as patient characteristics, visual needs, observed conditions, and tasks performed.

Each drop-down item carries a predefined risk rating of low, medium or high, which determines how many times a task must be completed and signed off by a Supervisor before the associated risk level is downgraded (eg from red to amber).

The framework sets clear expectations for the number and type of interactions students should have completed before each assessment visit. Full details can be found in the CLiP Assessment Handbook.

Progression monitoring

The assignment of user roles on the CLiP Portal means that everyone involved in monitoring the student’s progress (including the university and employers) will be able to see the dashboard simply by logging in. This will help everyone involved to see emerging problems and put support in place to help the student succeed.

Supervisors can monitor progress through the summary dashboard, helping them evaluate a student’s clinical development and readiness for increased independence, such as managing certain patient types without direct supervision.
